What moves platinum
Platinum is a small, industrial-heavy precious metal whose supply comes from very few places. That combination makes it prone to sharp moves.
- Auto catalysts. Car exhaust catalysts are the largest use. The mix of diesel, gasoline and hybrid vehicles shapes demand year to year.
- Concentrated supply. A large majority of mine output comes from one country, so power shortages, strikes or policy changes there can move the whole market.
- Substitution with palladium. Carmakers switch between platinum and palladium when the price gap gets wide enough, shifting demand between the two.
- Investment and jewellery. Bar, coin and jewellery buying, partly in Asia, adds a price-sensitive layer on top of industrial demand.
How this forecast is made
The desk compares today's situation with every comparable situation in roughly ten years of recorded daily closes, and counts how often the market was higher 20 trading sessions later. That count is pulled toward the market's own usual habit when the sample is small, so a thin sample cannot shout. When the evidence is not there, the desk says so instead of forcing a call.
