What moves gold
Gold has no earnings and pays no coupon, so its price is set by what holders give up to own it and by who is buying. Four forces do most of the work, and they rarely pull the same way at once.
- Real interest rates. Gold competes with bonds that pay an inflation-adjusted yield. When real yields fall, holding gold costs less and the metal tends to rise. When they climb, it faces a headwind.
- The US dollar. Gold is priced in dollars. A weaker dollar lifts the dollar price mechanically and makes gold cheaper for buyers abroad.
- Central-bank buying. Official reserve purchases are a large bid that does not care much about price. It can hold gold up even when rates argue the other way.
- Safe-haven demand. Geopolitical shocks, banking stress and fears about currency debasement pull money into gold quickly, and it can leave just as fast.
How this forecast is made
The desk compares today's situation with every comparable situation in roughly ten years of recorded daily closes, and counts how often the market was higher 20 trading sessions later. That count is pulled toward the market's own usual habit when the sample is small, so a thin sample cannot shout. When the evidence is not there, the desk says so instead of forcing a call.
