What moves copper
Copper goes into buildings, grids, motors and electronics, which is why traders treat it as a real-time gauge of global growth.
- Chinese demand. China consumes roughly half the world's copper, so its construction, grid and manufacturing activity moves the price more than any other buyer.
- Electrification. Electric vehicles, renewables and power-grid upgrades need far more copper than the systems they replace.
- Mine supply. New mines take many years to build and ore grades at existing mines are declining, so supply reacts slowly to higher prices.
- The dollar and inventories. A weaker dollar and falling exchange stocks tend to support the price; the opposite tends to weigh on it.
How this forecast is made
The desk compares today's situation with every comparable situation in roughly ten years of recorded daily closes, and counts how often the market was higher 20 trading sessions later. That count is pulled toward the market's own usual habit when the sample is small, so a thin sample cannot shout. When the evidence is not there, the desk says so instead of forcing a call.
