What moves the FTSE 100
The FTSE 100 lists the UK's largest companies, but most of their revenue is earned abroad. It is closer to a basket of global commodity, bank and consumer giants than a bet on the UK economy.
- Commodity prices. Oil majors and miners carry a large weight, so energy and metal prices move the index more than most other major markets.
- The pound. Most revenue comes from overseas. A weaker pound raises the value of those earnings in sterling and tends to lift the index.
- Banks and interest rates. Large banks benefit from higher rates and a steeper yield curve.
- Defensive sectors. Pharmaceuticals, tobacco and consumer staples give it a defensive tilt when growth stocks struggle.
How this forecast is made
The desk compares today's situation with every comparable situation in roughly ten years of recorded daily closes, and counts how often the market was higher 20 trading sessions later. That count is pulled toward the market's own usual habit when the sample is small, so a thin sample cannot shout. When the evidence is not there, the desk says so instead of forcing a call.
